The Church Anchor You should know a little about the large anchor up on the front of our church building. It is there for a few reasons: Our church is a part of a shore town and so an anchor is appropriate. The cruciform or cross shape of an anchor's stock may have been the reason for the anchor symbol to be used very early in the history of the Christian Church as a sign for grounding of all believers, their trust in the cross of Christ. The use of an anchor as a symbol is related to the Bible verse in Hebrews 6:19 speaking of our Christian hope as "the sure and steadfast anchor of the soul."	The Church Tower Our Church congregation dates back to 1876, the building being a former music hall/opera house. (That's why we like concerts and music, to keep that tradition going). Our tower was added in 1883 through a gift of Mrs. Sarah Remsen.

About Us.....

Rev. Robert E. (Bob) Lewis, Pastor of Wright Memorial Presbyterian Church - Barnegat, is a longtime resident of New Jersey . Born in Trenton, he has lived in New Brunswick, Fairview, Woodbridge, North Bergen, Atlantic City, Madison, Point Pleasant, Island Heights and now Barnegat.

Rev. Bob's university, theological, and graduate studies were pursued at Rutgers University , Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, Drew University Graduate School and New York University Graduate School .

He is married to Teresa Gray Lewis and is the father of four adult children: Timothy (Carlsbad, California), Cynthia (La Conner, Washington), Dorothea (Allentown, New Jersey), and Benjamin (San Diego, California). Bob has two very young granddaughters: Olivia and Ruby.
He has traveled extensively: Russia, Italy, France, United Kingdom, etc. and has ministered to churches in the USA and Canada.

Bob has taught, preached, or been invited as guest lecturer to the United Nations in NYC, Rowan College - Glassboro, Princeton University Graduate School, Drew University - Madison, NJ, the Lawrenceville School, Johnson and Johnson Corporate Headquarters, several Rotary Clubs, the International Studies Association - Anaheim, California and more.

He has co-founded an elementary school, established several prison ministries, co-founded inner-city ministries in Trenton, Newark, Elizabeth and Atlantic City and developed public leadership development dialogues for corporate leaders and other professionals.

He plays and sings with guitar ~ often before or during worship services in our church. He has written spiritual, personal and humorous songs for Church, Sunday school, family and friends.

His sporting activities include New York City Marathon running, annual backpacking in the High Sierra's of Central California, hiking the Appalachian Trail and long distance bike touring.

 

The Rev. Adrian G. (Ed) Tenhor, Assistant Pastor at Wright Memorial Presbyterian Church — Barnegat; was born in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York and brought up in Paterson, New Jersey. He has lived in Jersey City, Detroit, Michigan, and Brooklyn, New York.

Ed's undergraduate work was done at Drew University, Madison, N. J., a Masters Degree from Wagner College, Staten Island, his seminary degree from New Brunswick Theological Seminary, and a doctorate from New York Theological Seminary in New York City.

He is married to Janet and is the father of four adult children: Thomas (Chicago, Illinois, Steven, (Boston, Massachusetts), Susan (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Mark (Chicago, Illinois).

Ed and Janet have traveled twice to the Netherlands, to Hong Kong and China, twice to Great Britain, to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Japan, Greece, and Crete.

Ed is an ordained minister of the Reformed Church in America (retired) has served churches in Jersey City (6 years), Detroit (6 years), and Brooklyn (22 years). While ministering in Detroit, Ed was a Director of a methadone drug rehab program for five years and in Brooklyn established three SRO homeless housing programs, serving as their director for LSS/MNY. As Director of Housing for CASC in Staten Ed established five low income housing projects and housing for senior citizens. For three years Ed also taught a few courses in the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility as part of New York Theological Seminary's ministry to inmates.

Ed serves volunteer at Wright Memorial Presbyterian Church, preaching when Bob is away, singing in the Choir and with Wrighteous, Wright Memorial's bluegrass band. Ed also teaches Wright Memorial's Adult Study Program each Sunday.

Ed has published two articles for the Church Herald magazine and has published two books, That Rabbi from Nazareth and the forthcoming That Messiah from Qumran. Two more books are almost complete, A Life of Christ and 100+ Theologians Good and Bad.

Ed has been involved in an energetic walking program for the past three years, walking the entire 70 miles of the Delaware/Raritan Canal (5 walks) and the 130 miles of the coast of New Jersey (11 walks). He has twice in a single effort walked the length of Staten Island and twice the length of Brooklyn. His longest single walk was around Jamaica Bay, 20 miles.

He has been the President of the Council of Churches in Jersey City and the President of the Starrett City Lions Club. He was one of the key leaders of East Brooklyn Churches producing over 3000 Nehemiah homes for minority housing.

A special award was presented to Ed by New Brunswick Seminary, the A.J. Muste Memorial Award given in recognition of his years of urban work with minorities, the Poor, the addicted, and the incarcerated.
